Our courses of action:
The Petzl Foundation s mission is to support and initiate public interest projects through its activities in mountainous and vertical domains; projects that help bring balance to humankind s place in its natural, cultural, and economic environments. The foundation supports non-profit organizations through financial and equipment grants, as well as consultation and training.
Vertical Archaeology in Peru with Ukhupacha
Ukhupacha is an organization that enables scientists from around the world to explore inaccessible archaeological sites. Over the last 20 years, numerous archaeological expeditions throughout South America, including to Machu Picchu, Peru, have led the organization to develop the concept of Vertical Archaeology. Their goal is to train scientists and archaeologists to be proficient in vertical rope progression techniques, allowing them to safely and efficiently conduct research.
In October 2022, the Ukhupacha technical team spent a month in Pitumarca, in the Cusco region of Peru. Perched above the village at an altitude of 3500 meters, a striking limestone climbing area has been developed over the last few years by the local climbing community and the organization, 7a Escalada. Ukhupacha s mission has been to spread awareness about accident prevention within the climbing community, and to train Rondas Campesinas in basic rescue techniques. The aim is to teach them how to evacuate someone using a litter or to transport patients to medical centers from the remote areas where they live. At the end of the trip, members of Ukhupacha were able to explore two areas with great caving and archaeological potential.
In addition to financial support, the Petzl Foundation donated technical equipment that was made available to 7a Escalada and the community of Pitumarca. This has given them the tools to organize rescues for climbers or locals who regularly use the steep trails and sometimes experience falls or accidents.
