The mountains are at the forefront of climate

change, with warming in the Alps of 2.3°C since

1850. The consequences are already visible in

terms of snow cover, water resources and natural

hazards. Since 2022, the Petzl and Snowleader

Foundations have organised an annual call for

projects to encourage the ecological transition

in the mountains, with the aim of supporting as-

sociations and citizens’ groups that are taking ac-

tion for tomorrow.

In 2024, nine winners shared €60,000. The call for projects was

extended to the mountains of Europe, and two initiatives in Bul-

garia and Switzerland won awards. The actions aim to reduce

carbon emissions, regenerate biodiversity and raise awareness

of climate change.

Mountain Wilderness, the winning association in 2023 and

2024, has been working for over 35 years to ensure the coexis-

tence of wild mountains and mountains for living. It of fers an al-

ternative approach to the mountains, based on soft mobility and

a more authentic immersion in mountain areas. Far from quick

car journeys, the association encourages the use of alternative

transport (e.g. train or bike), mountain paths, spending the night

in a refuge or tent for a more environmentally-friendly expe-

rience and a dif ferent way of discovering the mountains.

With this in mind, the association designed the “Change our

Approach” awareness kit, aimed at climbing gyms, clubs and

professionals. It consists of 24 action sheets designed to inspire,

persuade and facilitate the organisation of soft mobility outings
