Mountaineering creates wonder, encourages contact with
nature and strengthens trust and relationships with others. It’s
no coincidence that many associations rely on the benef its of
the mountains to reintegrate disadvantaged groups or young
people who have dropped out of school.
The Petzl Foundation supports around ten associations and
schools that are working to give young people a second chance
by putting the mountains at the heart of their projects. Every
year, these associations organise two meetings to discuss their
activities and promote social diversity.
In June 2024, the Chamonix Film Festival organised a “Social
and Solidarity Mountain” day to bring together those committed
to more inclusive mountains. The organisers were fully aware
of the isolated nature of mountain environments, and wanted
to show how mountains are tending to become a ghetto for
the rich and that poverty is not inevitable. It is the result of f iscal
and economic policies that reinforce inequalities and mean
that 14.4% of the French population are vulnerable, i.e. 9.1 million
people
