Petzl
employees
get involved
Nikki Hammarström, Petzl Nordic Technical
Solutions Manager:
“People come to Sweden to f ind a better life. For
them, there is a big language barrier as well as culture
barrier to get into the Swedish society. Almost no
one had tried climbing before. When they saw how
it went, the vast majority of them tried. The climbing
was much appreciated! It was so successful that we
are already planning for one more event next year.”
Every year, the projects selected ref lect the diversity of their
commitments to helping young people and people in dif f iculty,
including recovery and climbing breaks for sick children, moun-
tain hikes in all-terrain wheelchairs, tandem walks for people
with dis
abilities, and training to encourage women to reach the
top. These initiatives promote solidarity, through bone marrow
donations, organising outings to prevent the isolation of the el-
derly... and even local initiatives for bike repairs!
T
wo of the eight projects submitted by employees in 2024
aim to strengthen community around the world:
1/ United States: empowering
female students through nature
The Women’s Outdoor Leadership Initiative (WOLI) is a student
club at the University of Utah that aims to create a community of
women on campus to support and empower each other to gain
leadership skills and conf idence through outdoor trips.
In 2024, WOLI hosted two weekend outdoor adventure trips to
learn outdoor skills, safety, and leadership. During the f irst trip
to the Wasatch Mountains, 15 participants learned about back-
packing fundamentals, including setting up camp, leave no trace
principles, and hiking s
afety. The second trip was an Introduc-
tion to Backcountry Navigation course in the San Rafael Swell,
including t
opographic map reading and compasses. This scho-
larship allowed 10 participants to get out into the wilderness.
2/ Climbing together in Sweden:
a day of inclusion for refugees
Sunday 8 September 2024 was a big day for many children and
young people from a refugee settlement in Västertorp south of
Stockholm Sweden The association Friluftsfrämjandet Hud
dinge invited them to try outdoor climbing in the scenic clif fs
of Häggsta close to Stockholm Also known as Bergsidan
mountain side this organisation is run by enthusiastic people
who are passionate about taking children and adults to enjoy
activities in nature and promoting diversity and inclusion for an
even better society A dozen volunteers gathered to belay top
rope climbing for nearly 30 participants most of whom were
aged 1015 In addition to climbing there was also grilled food
cooking of apple pie as well as various games The Petzl Foun
dation donated climbing equipment adapted to smaller children
and young people
Since 2017, the Petzl Foundation has supported
company employees who volunteer in general-
interest projects by non-prof it organisations.
Projects are chosen by a panel of employees
whose projects were supported the previous year.
This programme has supported 55 projects led
by employees in France, Europe and the United
