Fernand in his workshop
Our story begins in the 1930s in southeastern France
That was when craftsman Fernand Petzl was introduced to caving. Back at his workshop
after each excursion to the depths, Fernand imagined new tools for exploring darkness
and heights. In 1968, he marketed his first products; in 1970, Petzl was born.
For decades, the Petzl family has built a stable environment that fosters creative solutions
and industrial excellence. The new generation is rooted in these principles and ready to
make new discoveries.

Petzl is a family business that, over the years, has become the largest European manufacturer of personal protective
equipment for those who work and play in darkness or at height. All of our products are invented and developed at
our headquarters in the heart of the French Alps.
