area spurred economic development
in compliance with plant and wildlife
preservation guidelines. It also allowed us
to identify areas where we can improve for
future events, notably: a second training
session for the local rescue team was
postponed to 2024; it has been a challenge
to continue to support local development
after the end of the event; and we can f ind
ways to better manage donation gear in the
future.
Overview of the Petzl RocTrip
®
in
Manikia: The objective of the 2022 Petzl
RocTrip
®
was to establish a new climbing
area and bring the international climbing
community together around climbing’s
most iconic event. The event took on a
new format, forging a partnership with local
climbing organization, the Manikia Project.
To limit international travel, the number of
participants was capped at 350, with mostly
Europeans attending. More than a year
later, Petzl commissioned an independent
study to look at the economic, social,
and environmental impact of the event.
The study highlighted several positive points:
locals learned about climbing, climbers
were warmly welcomed, the event promoted
the region and the local organization,
rescuers were trained, and a new climbing
participate in activities that interested
them. Our only regret: one week passed
quickly and we weren’t able to f ind
a place for every activity. But it’s an
opportunity to keep the momentum
going or roll ideas over to the next
Sustainable Development Week,
which we’re already planning!

2023 KEY ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Employee Education via the European
Sustainable Development Week
Since September 2022, the European
Sustainable Development Week has
been co-organized by the Ecological
Transition Commission (open to all
employees), the CSR department, and
the Petzl Foundation. A collaborative
event, everyone came with their own
ideas and motivations. Ideas were
selected based on: feasibility (timing,
budget, logistics, etc.), if there were
project leaders that would ensure
deployment, and the pertinence of
the questions it raised about sustainable
development. Many different ideas
were proposed: building workshops;
installing birdhouses and biodiversity
education with the LPO (Ligue pour la
Protection des Oiseaux); building a solar
oven with help from the organization,
Entropie; a workshop titled “Building a
Low-Carbon Life”; lectures; testimonials
from staff on repairing products; a bike
repair workshop; a new, ethical catering
provider; education on alternative
transportation; outdoor outings; clothing
swaps and more. With a wide range of
options, many employees were able to
