We’ve already identif ied two other key steps
to continue to reduce the environmental
impact of our logistical f lows in this region
and on a global scale. It will mean stocking
EMEA-manufactured products at our hub
in Asia via a dedicated shipping route
to Malaysia. Orders will then be distributed
via different routes, with shorter distances
to our customers. While today, each one of
our products is manufactured at one single
location, the f inal step would be to develop
our manufacturing capabilities at each site
so that every one of our products can be
manufactured and shipped locally.
We had everything we needed internally
to move forward with this step and
do it well. It took some time, with
just two full-time employees working
on this transitional project and with
the involvement of our third party
logistics partner in Malaysia. Our sales,
administration, supply chain, and
transportation team played supporting
roles in this transition by adapting to
new methods and integrating ways
to manage this new f low of goods.
While the carbon tax probably would
have pushed us to take action in the
coming years, the real catalyst for us
was completing a carbon assessment
in 2020 and setting ambitious goals for
reducing CO
2
emissions. We didn’t wait
for regulations to impose requirements
on us to get started; we’re proud to have
taken a proactive approach.

Logistics Project Manager
To address this environmental and f inancial
inconsistency, we’ve taken these three
steps:
1. We’ve researched solutions with
a third party logistics partner in Malaysia.
Two Petzl employees joined this team
to support the process.
2. We’ve expanded our inventory
capacity to accommodate a third of
our SKUs, which can be supplied locally
then shipped from this new hub.
3. We’ve started the conversation with
our customers and distributors in the Asia-
Pacif ic zone to gauge their willingness to
place two separate orders: one for products
manufactured and stocked in Asia, and one
for products manufactured and stocked
in France. Overall, they’ve all responded
positively to the idea of this new system
which would allow us to considerably
reduce our respective environmental
impact and improve lead times.
Representing 3.5% of our overall
carbon footprint in 2020, or the
equivalent of 1700 metric tons of CO
2
,
optimizing the f low of goods to and
from the Asia-Pacif ic has allowed us
to reduce our CO
2
emissions, ranging
from a 20% reduction when using
air shipping, to 93% when using only
maritime shipping.
The next challenge will be working with our
customers to f ind solutions that will benef it
them, as well as reduce the use of air
shipping.
