Climate change (CO

2

kg equivalent) as a % of the VERTEX 3 helmet

On December 14

th

, Petzl welcomed over

thirty stakeholders from OSV (Outdoor

Sports Valley), a network of companies

committed to supporting recreation,

developing the outdoor industry economy,

and preserving natural spaces. This

collaborative day included sharing

information and ideas on how to measure

and market the environmental footprint

of products in the outdoor industry.

Other topics ranged from regulations,

measuring and reporting on Life Cycle

Analysis (LCA), and collectively engaging

outdoor brands in zero carbon initiatives.

Afterward, attendees formed inter-

company work groups to help further

progress on environmental issues. This

is one way that Petzl is working towards

f inding and sharing solutions that will

accelerate positive change within our

company.

In the “Climate Change” graphic, we can

see that extraction of raw materials is the

life cycle stage that represents the largest

environmental impact (57%). If we take a

closer look, one of the raw materials that

makes up a large portion of this is ABS at

49%, followed by PET (textile) at 19%. ABS

makes up around 50% of the total mass

of the helmet.

Our teams are currently working to f ind

solutions to reduce the impact of the shell

and materials from non-renewable sources,

ABS plastic being a major contributor.

4 - VERTEX 3 Helmet Example

We’ve already implemented many LCA pilot

projects, which led to major developments.

One such development is the new NEOX

®

belay device, which was covered in our

2022 Impact Report and will launch in 2024.

In 2023, we took a closer look at the

LCA of one of our top products in the

Professional market: the VERTEX helmet.

Working together, the product development

and CSR teams identif ied which helmet

components and materials were responsible

for the most signif icant environmental

impact.
