DECREASE IN THE CARBON INTENSITY OF NEOX® COMPARED TO GRIGRI®

The two other LCA pilot products include a harness and a headlamp.

This led us to use recycled fabric in the harness and its packaging. The process for the headlamp is currently underway and should be completed in 2023.

For the metal cam, we are currently testing a new process with a French supplier that will allow us to reuse manufacturing components. And for our suppliers located further away, we re currently working to optimize deliveries, prioritizing transport by boat over air. The sum of these actions reduces our carbon intensity by 20% compared to the GRIGRI®, our current belay device. This is consistent with our objective to reduce the carbon intensity of our products. Research is also underway to optimize the manufacturing process of another metal component. This would allow an additional savings of 14%.

2 - Pilot project: NEOX® In 2022, we launched LCA for three pilot products, bringing substantial improvements to two product ranges, both in level of design, and materials used.

The first of these eco-designed products is the NEOX® belay device, whose design process and materials meet our objective to reduce carbon intensity by 20%. The eco-design process also led to multiple optimizations.

For this product, we ve been working in close collaboration with a supplier to successfully implement two new recycled plastics. These plastics passed our qualifying tests and were validated by our R&D team, as well as our new eco-design project manager, whose mission is to source new, lower-impact materials.

Plastic pieces are responsible for 60% of the environmental impact of product components (which alone generate 78% of the emissions that come from producing a belay device). We were able to use recycled polyamide for all the plastic components, while maintaining required mechanical properties such as flexibility, necessary for assembling certain components, and extreme heat resistance, required for the handle.

2022 ACTIONS

1 - LCA tool development As an important step forward in eco-design, Petzl committed to formalizing the Life Cycle Analysis process for all products to be sold in 2025.

Our internal LCA tool was reviewed and optimized by a third party, RDC Environment. Following their review, a more ergonomic version was proposed by the Petzl Lean Management Team, allowing it to be distributed and integrated into management tools for existing projects, and adopted by our teams.

Like our global carbon footprint calculation, this new tool will be ready and deployed in 2023. It provides a multi-dimensional assessment that will allow us to study the impacts of our products on carbon production, which is the target indicator. Other indicators will also be assessed, including resource consumption (fossil fuel, minerals, and metals), and impact on water and air quality (fine particles, nitrous oxide, methane).
