Incinerated waste

The sum of these actions led us to a steadily improving result for 2022:

Lastly, just as we are currently able to recycle 100% of our metal waste, Petzl is continuously researching new ways to recover our waste. Notably, we are currently working on recovering rope scraps and glassine (glossy paper for self-adhesive labels).

In terms of reuse, we are collaborating with VALORALP to repurpose cardboard boxes, reinforcing third-party involvement in Petzl s CSR plan.

process our waste to facilitate reuse and provide this data to public officials.

These new obligations are perfectly aligned with our objectives on waste. We fully agree with the plan initiated in 2021 to analyze and optimize the life cycle of our products.

SOLUTIONS

The approach and solutions implemented by Petzl respond to three key objectives: reduce, reuse, recycle.

We implemented the Lean method in 2009, which means we already have experience with a mode of production centered around reducing waste.

Even so, we have pushed our capacity to reduce waste even further with the removal of plastic from packaging, and where possible, replacing plastic and other pollutants with lower-impact materials. This transition has been made for products as well as processes (storage, transport, chemical standard requirements).

CONTEXT

Reducing waste is an important priority for Petzl. It has a direct impact on the pollution of soil and oceans, as well as biodiversity, whose planetary boundary has already been crossed.

After taking inventory of our waste in 2019, Petzl committed to eliminating single-use plastics, as well as establishing systems to reuse and recover waste generated by our activity, as soon as possible. The first stage was accomplished in 2021, as we were able to recycle or reuse 80% of waste generated in France. The remaining 20% was incinerated, excluding landfill waste.

Since January 1, 2022, the expansion of extended producer responsibility (EPR) has reinforced the legal requirements applicable to Petzl and other manufacturers of sport and recreational items. Like all actors in our industry, we are now responsible for all of our products life cycles, and we have an obligation to declare the volume and weight of products we sell, as well as the rate of recycled material. We must collect and

OBJECTIVES

By 2025, eliminate single-use plastics in our packaging, reuse 50% of our cardboard and palettes, and recover 80% of our waste.
