THE PETZL FOUNDATION
Other 2022 Projects
The Petzl Foundation helps marginalized communities explore mountains and the vertical world. We support conferences, exhibits, and scientific programs to help share the latest information developing around high-altitude environments.
THE HEALING POWER OF NATURE
Nathan Schmidt, a former US Army Marine, created the Mountain Seed Foundation. He regularly works with children experiencing post-traumatic shock as a result of war. He believes that interacting with nature and spending time in the mountains can be comforting and help build their confidence for the future.
Mountain Seed Foundation focuses on guiding Ukrainian refugees that have fled the country since February 2022. This summer, a team of five therapists and eight mountaineers trained in war trauma guided 34 young Ukrainians and their families in the Austrian mountains. The experience has enabled these young people to find hope in a disrupted daily life. Mountain Seed Foundation Climbing and mountaineering gear donation.
Line Escalade is an organization that serves critically-ill or disabled children. Support from the Petzl Foundation helped finance training on climbing and disabilities for caregivers, physical therapists, and occupational therapists at the Romans Ferrari de Miribel Re-education Center.

SUPPORTING YOUTH IN THE OUTDOORS
The Petzl Foundation supports several programs that work with high- risk youth. In 2022, we renewed our support for En passant par la montagne and Sport dans la ville, two organizations that help young people gain professional opportunities through exploring sports and professions in the mountains. Through their programming, more than a hundred youth in France have discovered the outdoors and learned about professional opportunities in the mountains.
Le Seuil is an organization that helps at- risk youth, ages 14 to 18, who have difficult family lives, have dropped out of school, or are socially isolated, and have been referred to the Legal Protection for Youth agency or Child Welfare services. Every year, Le Seuil hosts more than 30 backpacking experiences to help participants reintegrate into society. Each participant hikes for nearly 3 months. No phones, no music, just the company of a guide from the organization. The program has an 84% success rate. 57% of youth choose to join a reintegration program following their experience.
