IMAGINE YOUR MOUNTAINS
Ten foundations and endowment funds from the mountain region have come together to propose a call for projects for Imagine tes montagnes (Imagine Your Mountains). The Petzl Foundation is participating for the second time, with a 27,000 donation to support youth in protecting the mountains against the effects of climate change. Support: 3,000
ROAD MAP TO A LOW-CARBON LIFESTYLE
Following the organization of five international conferences on mountain sustainability, including one in Chamonix in 2018, the Sustainable Summit collective has shifted its educational approach for climbers and mountaineers. Their work is now focused on the carbon emissions of mountain athletes in their everyday life, as well as in the mountains. The collective has developed a website: Climbers Cutting Carbon, that offers North American climbers advice on how to advocate for the climate, how to assess their personal carbon footprint, and how to effectively live a low-carbon lifestyle.
Continuing in 2023
An adaptation of this site for Europe and then Asia is under consideration following a test period in the United States and Canada. The American Alpine Club Support: 5,000
Every year, the Petzl Foundation supports more than fifty projects. Here are a few examples of current projects that encourage exploration of the vertical world and support ecological transition in mountainous areas.
PREVENTING AVALANCHES
We re continuing to support the development and use of Yeti and Skitourenguru route-finding applications to identify the best path based on snow conditions. In 2023, we ll focus on digitizing main routes in the French Alps. Soon, nearly 4,000 routes will be evaluated every day in winter. This project is supported by the Petzl Foundation, along with the National School of Geographic Sciences, and Skitourenguru.ch. Support: 35,000
RESTORING HEDGEROWS
Each year, the French countryside loses 11,500 km of hedgerow. This ecosystem is an exceptional habitat for biodiversity.
It protects soil fertility by slowing down erosion, acts as a carbon sink, and provides easy-to-access wood for energy reserves. The Tree Fund is leading an ambitious program to replant and restore rural hedges throughout France. Our support targets mountain regions. Fonds pour l arbre (The Tree Fund) Support: 30,000
