In 2020, we evaluated 50 suppliers considered to be key based on the type of products they supply and the purchase volume. These suppliers represented 80% of Petzl sourcing.
We evaluated 28 suppliers in 2021 and 37 in 2022, following a three-year evaluation plan.
Of the 37 who were evaluated in 2022, 31 completed self-evaluations, two underwent internal audits from Petzl, and four received external audits. Five suppliers scored an A, 26 received a B, six were given a C, and none received a D grade.

We hired a Responsible Sourcing Coordinator, who has supported and accelerated deployment of this global plan. In her role, she has reinforced environmental criteria monitoring across departments and collaboration between development and eco-design teams with our suppliers. Additionally, she plays an important role in CSR risk management and engages our suppliers as they work to reduce their carbon output.
This work is fundamental to our goals; training our stakeholders is a key factor in our success. That s why we trained our purchasing team on the tools and techniques for CSR evaluation. We educate and offer guidance for our suppliers when it comes to the evaluation process, action plans, and improvement initiatives; especially on the topic of carbon assessment and monitoring.
The evaluation plan follows this three-year timeline:
SOLUTIONS
First, every new supplier is invited to sign our code of conduct when they begin collaborating with Petzl. As soon as a significant update is made to the code, it is re-sent to all of our suppliers.
Evaluating supplier conformity to our code of conduct is done with 22 CSR criteria, organized under 4 categories (ethical leadership, human rights in the workplace, health and safety, the environment), given a score from A to D.
Our responsible sourcing plan was developed in 2020 and continues to be deployed in four ways:
- Respecting our Supplier Code of Conduct
- Evaluating our suppliers
- Identifying areas of improvement
- Creating a plan of action and support
CONTEXT
In 2010, we created our first Supplier Code of Conduct. It became the cornerstone of our responsible sourcing plan, outlining our requirements for ethical, social, and environmental practices.
Our code includes areas of action defined by international standards. These actions allow us to support our suppliers and work together to reconcile economic, environmental (product impact throughout its life cycle), and social (working conditions at supplier facilities and Petzl/ supplier relations) performance.
In the last three years, health and economic challenges have revealed the strategic role of our sourcing department and their ability to anticipate and handle highly complex disruptions and shortages. They have to manage instability and stress on certain markets, all while maintaining a sustainable business model.
OBJECTIVE
Support all our direct suppliers in their own CSR plans by 2025.
