REDUCING PLASTIC IN PACKAGING

For headlamps alone, we went from 56 metric tons to just 4 a 93% reduction. Considering these results, we project another reduction in 2023, and again in 2024. Our objective is to use zero plastic in our headlamp packaging in 2025.

Transport and logistics also generate significant impacts. Necessary materials (cardboard, plastic, palettes) were often used and then thrown away. Petzl first worked on reducing their use before focusing on reusing or recovering these materials.

Single-use plastic films used to secure the contents of pallets have been replaced with reusable plastic caps equipped with straps. This method is now used for all pallets in transit between our three French sites. It has allowed us to eliminate 2 metric tons of single-use plastic film and save the equivalent of 4 metric tons of CO2 per year.

FUTURE ACTIONS

To further reduce the quantity of shipping boxes, and optimize packing and loading, our guidelines will continue to evolve in 2023.

Beyond reducing materials used (estimated 2.3% in 2022) this will allow us to reduce the number of trips and therefore, reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

2022 ACTIONS

At the end of 2021, 79 metric tons of non-reusable plastic was used for product packaging; of which 56 metric tons was for headlamp packaging. This packaging represents between 5 and 10% of our products CO2 impact (data from LCA).

By the end of 2022, the transition to cardboard allowed us to drastically reduce our use of plastic product packaging. The result was positive: with 26 metric tons of non-reusable plastic left in our packaging, we reduced our impact by 67% globally.
