Impact Report
In 2004 , a renovation project for the Aigle Hut ( Écrins
massif , France ) , which involved demolishing this heri -
tage site , sparked strong opposition within the moun -
tain community . The Petzl Foundation funded a new
architectural study in order to preserve the original tim -
ber frame dating back to 1910 , as well as the wooden
bunks polished by generations of mountaineers . The
project won broad support . The new Aigle Hut ( refuge
de l ’ Aigle ) was inaugurated in 2014 .

Accident patterns and the causes of rockfall
in the Goûter Couloir on the normal route up
Mont Blanc ( Haute - Savoie , France ) are now
well documented thanks to studies conducted
in partnership with mountain rescue services
( PGHM ) and the CNRS . This new knowledge ,
widely shared , has helped better inform clim -
bers , who are now more aware of the dangers
involved and of the measures needed to avoid
them . Through its work , the Petzl Foundation
opened up what was sometimes a diff icult de
bate in an effort to f ind solutions and restore the
experience of climbing Mont Blanc
This work on the Goûter Couloir complements
a wider series of scientif ic studies on accident
patterns in mountain sports aimed at identifying
typical accident scenarios and the prof iles of
climbers most at risk
How can risk be reduced
in the Goûter Couloir on
Mont Blanc ?
