The deeper we go ,
the more we uncover
As the work progresses , quantifying our transport
and packaging f lows is proving far more complex
than expected . Each supplier , each product and
each use case has its own specif icities .
One concrete example : the quantif ication of poly
-
bags and minigrips alone — used among other
things for spare parts and accessories — revealed
an additional 24 tonnes of plastic , split between pri
-
mary and secondary packaging , and absent from
the previous assessment . That is the reality : the fur
-
ther we go , the more we ref ine , and the more we
uncover . The remaining volumes are often modest ,
but very widely dispersed A few hundred kilos each
time yet requiring as much effort as eliminating se
veral tonnes
This f igure will continue to evolve as it is based on
estimates Even so it tells us something essential
tackling the last remaining volumes of plastic means
accepting that progress will not always be linear
Changing scale
To reduce , you f irst have to measure , in order to
know where you stand . Since 2021 , we have been
quantifying plastic volumes and updating this as -
sessment every year . It is a long , often painstaking
process , but an essential one .
Work on primary packaging — that of f inished
products — has been underway for several years
and is bearing fruit . The f igures prove it . But if we
want to see it through , we now need to widen the
scope . That is what we did by opening up work on
secondary packaging — our suppliers ’ packaging
— which protects products throughout the supply
chain , sometimes all the way to distributors .
This represents a major change of scale for Julie
Lelong , Continuous Improvement Project Manager ,
who leads the project , as the company sources
from several hundred suppliers to supply four pro
-
duction sites . That means just as many f lows and
uses to analyse and evolve .
Because this packaging is designed by suppliers ,
changing it involves substantial work in terms of
dialogue , awareness - raising and revising speci
-
f ications . Once again , understanding everyone ’ s
constraints and co - building solutions is essential .
As with the optimisation of professional helmet pac
-
kaging in 2024 , Julie relies on a multidisciplinary
team to move things forward .
