employee volunteers in France Europe and the United States
have been funded Each year the projects selected ref lect the

In 2015 , a lava lake formed in the crater of Masaya , a volcano lo -
cated on Nicaragua ’ s west coast . This geological curiosity offered
scientists a rare opportunity to study a lava lake and its impact on
the surrounding environment , which is affected by toxic gas emis -
sions . In July 2017 , the GeoArc Foundation brought together a mul -
tidisciplinary team of researchers , volcanologists and specialists in
rope access in diff icult environments . Together , they developed an
aerial rigging system to lower sensors into the depths of the Masaya
crater . The system required more than 1 . 2 km of rope to span a
crater 500 metres wide and 400 metres deep .
