Beware of impact
transfers
So we need to understand the specif icities of each
use case and test , test and test again . Should we
opt for paper alternatives ? Consider boxes for heavy
parts ? Group items differently ? And above all , avoid
impact transfers : stronger paper is often heavier ,
and therefore potentially more carbon - intensive .
Some changes require testing under real condi
-
tions . For example , probes were placed in contai -
ners during sea freight shipments in order to mea -
sure humidity and temperature f luctuations . This
then makes it possible to adjust packaging levels
as accurately as possible .
Each project takes time . “ On average , six months
of testing , followed by six months of deployment . It
takes time . It is painstaking . But that is the price of a
serious approach , ” Julie explains .
We are not moving as fast
as we would like , but
we are moving forward
Today , all our f lows have been identif ied . The levers
for action are known . Now they simply need to be
activated one by one , with patience and method .
A few concrete results illustrate both the pro
-
gress made and what still lies ahead :
Replacing plastic tape on cartons with paper
avoids 3 tonnes of plastic every year ;
Professional helmet packaging has been re -
designed , eliminating 11 tonnes of plastic
annually ( with a further 1 . 5 tonnes still to be
addressed for sport helmets ) ;
Plastic in belay device packaging is current -
ly being phased out , representing 2 fewer
tonnes per year ;
And the protective inserts separating helmets
within the same carton will gradually disappear .
Work on polybags and minigrips ( the small plastic
bags used for spare parts and accessories ) is also
underway . Testing is increasing , and solutions com
-
patible with industrial and environmental constraints
are beginning to emerge .
This is long - term work , but deeply structuring work .
Because the truth is that , for years , plastic was
the easiest solution : economical , lightweight and
robust . Moving away from it therefore requires a
change of paradigm involving the entire ecosystem :
suppliers internal teams and logistics partners
Today the packaging for our f inished products is
almost entirely free of plastic The work now conti
nues with our partners This transformation must
be sustained over time through a constant effort
to raise awareness and align the entire chain of
stakeholders around a clear objective zero single
use plastic
