The Makay massif , in south - west Ma -
dagascar , covers 4 , 000 km ² and forms
a labyrinth of canyons that remain lar -
gely unexplored . It is home to excep -
tional biodiversity and signif icant ar -
chaeological remains . Since 2009 , the
association Naturevolution has orga -
nised naturalist expeditions there with
Malagasy researchers and scientists to
study and protect this sanctuary of en -
demic species . In partnership with lo -
cal communities , it is working to secure
lasting Protected Area status from the
Malagasy authorities . The association
is also carrying out similar projects in
Indonesia , in the karst landscapes of
Sulawesi , which are under threat from
mining and oil palm cultivation .

Mountain activities inspire wonder encourage contact with
nature and strengthen self conf idence and relationships with
others Many organisations draw on the benef its of the moun
tains to support the social and professional inclusion of people
facing hardship and young people who have dropped out of
school The Petzl Foundation supports around ten associations
and educational institutions working to offer people a second
chance by placing the mountains at the heart of their project
